Rationale and Method for Ann Arbor Class of 1970 Alumni Directory

Classmates: Obviously, many hours of research and "detective work" were spent in accumulating information of over 1300 students who attended either Huron or Pioneer High Schools in 1970. We had many interesting experiences in Elementary, Junior High School and High School and now we have the opportunity to share our life experiences, and reminisce about previous experiences together. Without a doubt, we have an interesting group of people in our class with some very unique individuals. Much of the research has been a joy! Some research was spent in reviewing available historical documents like Yearbooks, Graduation Lists, etc. Trips have been made to several schools, and several classmates have shared information. Classmate David Partington provided an "official" Huron graduation list, but no Pioneer official graduation list has been forthcoming. If any classmate would like to copy and/or scan the document and send to me, that would be a big help.

Since we live in a different communication age today, I decided that addresses and phones need not be published. Also, one classmate expressed concerns about privacy. I do have many phone numbers and addresses; however, since many e-mails are provided, one may request phone and/or addresses from classmates they are interested in contacting. The "old fashioned" method of mailing is not only costly and time consumming, but obsolete when virtually our entire culture uses e-mail, cell phones, texts, instant messaging, faxing, Facebook, etc. There really isn't anything published in the directory that can't be obtained through a web search.

Classmates were asked numerous times to help by providing their 6th grade Elementary School, and information was obtained for about 457 classmates by July 1. Old Tappan Trefoil, Slauson Exodus and Forsythe Saga yearbooks to accumulate information about 9th grade Junior High School and missing classmates who didn't apparently graduate with the Ann Arbor Class of 1970.

If there are any classmates who need their information edited, I'll be happy to edit the information if you e-mail me at davetgc@yahoo.com, and I plan to do another update after the July 30-August 1, 2010 40th Reunion. We live in a time where people move, change phones, e-mails, names, etc. on a frequent basis so please feel free to contact me and I'll try to update the information frequently (weekly or monthly).

My goal in doing this directory was to assist classmates in connecting with each other. I made a decision to help the reunion committee as a result of disappointment in the cancellation of the 2005 event on Saturday, and attended reunion committee meetings on June 16, July 7, August 20, September 22, 2009 and March 16, 2010. I set up the Ann Arbor Class of 1970 Facebook Group on June 24, 2009 and it has grown to 265 members as of August 19, 2010 and I've been able to identify at least 350+ of our classmates on Facebook to date. My efforts to help promote, market and advertise the 40th reunion has been with the hope that many of us may re-connect daily, weekly, monthly in addition to every 5 years. There are also web links set up with informative web page information about at least 85 of our classmates.

There are over 1105 pictures up on the Facebook group as of August 19, 2010, and some video clips as well from the Sunday picnic. Please send me any .jpg and/or video files if you'd like. In addition, some of you may have saved Elementary School pictures of your class and I've already put some up. If you find more, please send me a copy to scan and put up. Thus far, I've put up all senior pictures from the Huron Enthymion and Pioneer Omega from 1970, but also Junior and Sophomore homeroom pictures from 1969 and 1968, University High School pictures from 1964-1968, Junior High School Pictures from Tappan, Forsythe and Slauson and some Elementary school pictures.

I am a resource for news and information, but you are, too. Please feel free to e-mail me articles about former classmates to post on the Facebook group or simply post them yourself. The only thing I ask, as the board administrator, is please keep things positive. Although criticism and negativity are part of our culture, but please use discretion in sharing your thoughts privately rather than publicly. The Facebook group and wall was set up for classmates to share and connect in a positive way rather than to be a venue to create disharmony.

Looking forward to re-connecting with you at the 40th reunion, and any other time you wish to connect! Greg Winokur has offered to set up a 60th birthday party reunion as he did for the 50th in 2012, and Glenn Miller has expressed interest in organizing a 45th reunion in 2015.

Thanks,
