Approximately 122,000 11th grade students across the State of Michigan took the new Michigan Merit Exam in March, 2007. The assessments given included ACT (English, Reading, Mathematics, Science and Writing), ACT-Work Keys (Applied Reading and Applied Mathematics) and MEAP (Michigan Education Assessment Program) designed assessments in Social Studies and Mathematics. 94% of the students taking the exam qualified for the Michigan Promise Scholarship although the largest school district in the state, Detroit, only had 35% of their participating students qualify for the new scholarship. Unfortunately, Detroit Public Schools also led the nation in a recent Education Week article with only a 25% graduation rate.
