Occupational Outlook Handbook Summary

by Michigan Career Pathway

The Occupational Outlook Handbook is a phenomenal resource for determining career choices. There are at least 370 job categories and over 135 million jobs studied in the 2002-2003 Occupational Outlook Handbook representing 88% of all jobs in the United States (153 million total). These job categorires have been sub-divided into the six career pathways (Michigan version) for further study. Some occupations could fit into two pathways easily, and it was difficult deciding some of those for prioritization; therefore some of the percentages utilized should have the standard +/-3% for error. There are 141 job categories that have outlooks for future growth as fast as average, 86 with faster than average growth potential, 65 with slower than average growth potential, 42 with declining growth, 26 with no change in growth, and 9 with much faster than average growth potential. I have sorted each job category in order by highest median income (2000). Here are the results:

ARTS & COMMUNICATIONS

There are at least 24 job categories and nearly 3 million jobs in this category. This represents only 2% of all jobs in the United States, and many jobs in this category require some type of "special talent" and are highly competitive for entry level and experienced positions. Only one category has much faster than average growth, six more with faster than average, nine with average growth, only one with slower than average growth, and five with declining growth. Overall, this is a category than most people find fascinating because of the special talent or expertise involved and the public affirmation and attention generated; most of us enjoy these things as hobbies, to study or observe, but few of us may actually earn a living in these occupations.

BUSINESS

There are at least 84 job categories and over 50 million jobs in this category; this represents nearly 40% of all jobs in the United States. Obviously, computer skills are a hot commodity; computer information systems, hardware/software engineers, systems analysts, database managers, etc. are all in hot demand. This particular job group is affected significantly by outsourcing, temporary employment or "temps," labor union attrician and will be impacted more and more by new advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, etc. It appears that the future will hold many high paying and low paying occupations with not as much balance in between. Almost every business in the 21st century will come under financial scrutiny (accountants and auditors) to protect the public from fraud and other abuses. There is a great deal of pressure on the insurance industry to maintain cost controls in our society because of the use of litigation. One of the growing industries is gaming or the legalized gambling industry where most states now have approved areas for gambling besides state lotteries.

ENGINEERING & MANUFACTURING
There are at least 127 job categories and over 35 million jobs in this category; this represents approximately 24% of all jobs in the United States. There are so many technological advances affecting several industries, but the most significant factor is that half of all jobs in this pathway have declining, slower than average or no change in growth. There were no jobs in this group growing much faster than our economy. The mining, oil & gas industries, etc. have really declined and cut back. The airline and transporation industries have been impacted negatively by terrorism. The construction industry subcontracts almost every job with construction managers supervising and micromanaging the smallest details. Machine operators are being negatively impacted by advances in robotics; also, labor union membership and its power in negotiating contracts have significantly declined. As workers are forced into subcontracting and labor union's power has decreased, worker benefits such as health care, wages and retirement benefits have also decreased. On the bright side, there is always room for employment for exceptional engineers and workers with exceptional skills.

HEALTH SCIENCES

There are at least 53 job categories and nearly 10 million jobs in this category; this represents approximately 7.5% of all jobs in the United States. This job category is perhaps the fastest growing overall with no job groups declining and all but five growing at least as fast as average in our economy with 31 growing faster than our economy's growth. Again, education is critical in almost all of these occupations with state licenses, laws, etc. requiring certain licensing, certification, experience, etc. Virtually all the highest paying occupations require some type of advanced degree and because our educational system can't keep up with technological and scientific advances, many jobs have gone to requiring certificates rather than degrees. Future technology here will determine many future jobs including genetic therapy, nanotechnology, etc. The health, pharmaceutical and insurance industries will somehow need to form some type of partnership between the business side of health care costs and the human side of nurturing and caring for people. Issues in mental health appear to be one of the current dilemnas facing health care and insurance industries. There is a huge need for young people to consider occupations in this "caring for people" pathway; however, when most young people are surveyed, few show interest in many of these professions. It is also a pathway dominated by the female gender; on the bright side, more women are graduating from colleges and universities than men.

HUMAN SERVICES

There are at least 67 job categories and over 33 million jobs in this category; this represents approximately 24% of all jobs in the United States. Education appears to be critical element in this job group. There is only one declining job category: service station attendants. Some future considerations in this job category include changes in tenure laws for teachers, continued decline in labor unions, educational salaries continued to be scrutinized including benefits, educational experiences facilitated by computer experiences, virtual reality and holographic images, etc. Again, there seems to be some very high paying and very low paying jobs in the future. On the bright side, the safety/security industries are booming and people will always depend on personal services; also, there doesn't seem to be any end in sight for people's appetite for litigation or settling conflict through litigation.

Out of 280 million Americans from the census of 2000, there are approximately 9 million workers unemployed in the United States, ? retired workers (34 million over the age of 65 in 2000; 40 million receiving social security benefits), 53 million students in public and private education K-12, 15 million children under the age of 6 and another 1.5 million employed at various duties with our Armed Forces. We also have some people independently wealthy who don't need to work because they have enough resources. Let us not forget the criminal element in our society with over 2 million people housed in our nation's prisons and jails and another 5 million or so on some type of probation; crime is "big business" and is chosen by many as a livelihood.
