SUMMER Programs/Internships/Jobs
Summer Programs and Transfer
of Credit:
Several students took classes at Michigan
State University through their high
achievers program, but also at other locales like Northwestern
University and other enrichment experiences. Some of these opportunities
offered high school credit for participation in this experience.
Mr. Taylor encourages students to participate in many of these
outstanding opportunities, and thinks it is wonderful that students
have had successful learning experiences there. East Lansing High
School only considers adding this credit to the student's transcript
through the Transfer of Credit
form in advance of participating in this experience.
In most cases, Mr. Taylor advises that
if a student doesn't need the extra credit to graduate, the student
doesn't need to add it to their high school transcript. Mr. Taylor
will simply note the experience when he writes a student's recommendation
letter for college or university admissions, scholarship participation,
etc. In most cases, students taking these experience are not behind
in high school credits, and if placed on the transcript, it will
only show "elective" credit which is meaningless to
a college admissions representative unless clarification is attached.
CHAMPS is
a perfect example of a program that appears on a student transcript
that needs further clarification when they apply to colleges and
universities other than Michigan State University.
Some of these experiences offered college
credit, and Mr. Taylor advises that, if the student doesn't need
the extra credit to fulfill graduation requirements, this not
be considered to be added to their high school transcript. Some
colleges and universities including Michigan State will not grant
college credit if the course is also taken for high school credit.
