Financial Aid Student Guide for 2005-2006-U.S. Department of Education

Volunteer Work Leads to Scholarships

Important: many scholarship applications require recommendations. Don't wait till the last minute!!! Start a file and put 2-5 recommendation letters inside along with several copies of your most up to date transcript. Also, have a current resume highlighting your scholastic record and portfolio!!! Here are some Financial Aid Offices at Colleges and Universities! Take the Taylor Challenge!!!

The best scholarship search website is: www.fastweb.com. Also, the State of Michigan has MI-SEARCH (formerly called MI-CASHE), Sallie Mae (College Answer) at http://www.collegeanswer.com/index.jsp and ScholarAid at www.ScholarAid.com. Mr. Taylor gets most of his sources from Teacher magazine, Chronicle of Higher Education magazine, Education Week magazine, and other numerous magazines that he skims daily, weekly and monthly. In addition, there are several websites, scholarship books, mail solicitations, newspaper articles and other sources. Here is the ACT financial aid estimator and SAT Financial aid calculator! Don't forget the CollegeBoard search! Yahoo has started their own pages: Scholarship_Programs and Scholarship_Search_Services

DUAL ENROLLMENT/POSTSECONDARY OPTIONS-what a tremendous scholarship opportunity. Students in 11th & 12th grades may take college courses paid for by your school district. For example, one three-credit course at Lansing Community College costs $156 each semester. Courses can be taken at Lansing Community College, Michigan State University, etc. (or on-line and independent study courses) and can be transferred to colleges/universities to meet basic studies requirements (see college advisor for details). Students who dual enroll may be placed on a reduced high school schedule (4-5 periods). Courses may be taken at LCC, Michigan State, etc. All students must qualify by passing their high school MEAP tests in the appropriate area that they wish to dual enroll in (Reading, Writing, Math, Science or Social Studies) and take a course which your High School doesn't offer (Astronomy, Japanese, etc.). East Lansing High School limits the payment to 1/12 of our state foundation allowance which currently is a little more than $500 per class taken per semester.http://admissions.msu.edu/AP-CLEP-IB-A_Levels-Dual_Enrollment.asp

Note: Some scholarship deadlines change while others discontinue their programs. This page is an attempt to keep you informed with up to date information, but it is not always accurate. Plan on writing, calling, e-mailing, etc. to see if the information is correct or outdated.
