There was an average salary in the State of Michigan of $52,161 for 78,148 teachers accumulating over $40 million dollars in overall teacher salaries. Of course, $52,161 in 2004 has the same buying power as $47,549 in 2000, $36,090 in 1990, $22,753 in 1980, $10,714 in 1970 and $8,173 in 1960. 2001-2002 SCHOOL YEAR All the following are based on the State of Michigan "average" salary report (1014) for the 1998-99 school year, Uniserv reports of teacher contract settlements, the U.S. Government Consumer Price Index page, etc. Let's face facts: school districts (administrators) and teacher unions (MEA-Uniserv) try their hardest to keep salary comparisions out of the news and to keep this public information "hidden" to the best of their abilities for negotiation purposes! This makes comparing "apples to apples" and "orange to oranges" comparisons (fair) difficult at best. These figures do not include longevity pay, bonuses, higher pay scales (i.e. M.A.+ or B.A.+, etc.), etc. First, let's look at the Consumer Price Index to see what a dollar in 2001 equals in previous decades:
